In general, any sort of infrastructure decommissioning exercise should involve the following:
1. Lining up on demand support from your vendors if problems arise
2. Defining a roll back plan and triggers for executing the roll back plan
3. Defining the roll back approach - phased over multiple days/weekends or big bang
4. Developing or confirming the quality of the test suite to be used to ensure that things continue to work as expected
5. Ensuring you have touched base with all key stakeholders to understand downstream and upstream impacts
6. Developing and executing a solid communications management plan
