Most of today tools are using AI from long time ago, mainly to create predictions and schedule optimization. What people has to understand is that the final decision is on hands of human beings. AI algorithms usually create 3 options with probability associated to each one but human being has to decide what to do.

Ahmad -

AI could eventually help or takeover ALL hard/technical activities of a PM and could assist with some soft/power skill related activities (e.g. rewriting a communique to be better received based on the communication style of a given stakeholder) but won't replace those.

Keep in mind all AI and ML depend on millions of data points for training. The nature of projects is they are unique. That being said, I will use ChatGPT to do clean up on short communication text and some grant proposal boilerplate.

My organization uses AI extensively across every sector. Marketing is utilizing AI Mirror, AI Image Generation, AI SEU generation, webpage development and more.

Sales is generating different configurations of systems to better serve customer needs, as well as to expedite planning and better handoff and conclusion of a sale to the production floor.

HR/Safety use the data to run multiple analysis on different bits of data, be it demographic, incident, risk, workers comp, training.

Being new to the field I've integrated AI into almost every field of my project work to some degree. I don't think it will replace our work as there are to many human elements to handle, but it operates as a great tool to maximize efficiency reducing the amount of work required to pretty much only peer reviewing documents before use.

my take is number 4, communication.

It will for example enable us to communicate faster with better messages, feedback and knowledge sharing. This is not limited to PM, but certainly important to PM too.

Number 5 restated as decision making could be almost as important. I do not think the 'data driven' needs to limit other ways of decision making.

Overall, AI exists since 30 years or so, and it got better for all day use of more humans over the time. So we see the hype now.

I do not think PM specific tools have a own significant market, general human thinking can be supported by AI tools and applied to PM as well (emails, DMs, Excel and now ChatGPT are not PM specific but can be used by PMs).

AI has the potential to greatly enhance and automate many hard/technical activities performed by project managers. From optimizing resource allocation to analyzing complex data sets, AI can assist in streamlining and improving project management processes. Additionally, AI can also provide valuable support in soft/power skill-related tasks, such as refining communication strategies based on stakeholder preferences.

However, it is important to note that while AI can augment and assist project managers, it cannot fully replace them. The human element, including critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and decision-making based on context and experience, remains indispensable in project management. Thus, AI should be seen as a valuable tool that complements and enhances the capabilities of project managers, rather than a complete replacement.
