If the PMP is 50% agile content, why would someone need the PMI-ACP?

Graduate students ask me why I have both certifications, PMP and PMI-ACP. I explain in 2011, the PMI-ACP was the only certification with agile content, for PMI.

They ask now that the PMP is 50% agile or hybrid, why should they consider pursuing the PMI-ACP and paying for both certifications.

PMI-ACP gives you exposure to much more than just high level Agile and Hybrid approaches. It dives deep into tools, techniques and much more.

Kevin -

A lot depends on the positioning - the PMP is obviously aimed at PM practitioners whereas the ACP was aimed at agile leads which is a role which could be played by a PM but could also be a "standalone" Scrum Master, XP Coach or other role.

A larger potential overlap exists with the DASSM and PMI-ACP certifications - while the former is obviously Disciplined Agile-focused, they both cater to the same type of roles.

Kiron,

If I have passed the PMI-ACP exam, when is the DASSM certification recommended?

The ACP does not expose you to the depth and breadth of roles, life cycles, practices and tools which the DA toolkit offers as it focuses very much just on core agile concepts, a lot of Scrum and a little XP and Kanban whereas DA is much broader.

So think of DASSM as extending your versatility to work with teams in contexts where a single popular framework might not be a good fit.

Hi Kevin -

PMP mainly focus on the PM profile & also give high-level understating of Agile, while PMI-ACP gives exposure to much more than just a high level Agile approach. It provide deep understanding of tools, techniques & framework needed for the same.

May be PMI started including the Agile part along with PMP, considering the current market need. But, to gain deep knowledge & to be a agile specialist one has to be PMI-ACP.

Regards

The PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner) certification provides a more specialized and in-depth focus on agile methodologies compared to the PMP. For professionals seeking to excel in agile project environments, the PMI-ACP offers valuable insights, tools, and techniques that complement the broader knowledge gained from the PMP. Earning both certifications can enhance one's versatility and effectiveness in managing projects, whether they are traditional or agile in nature.

While it is true that the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification has incorporated some agile and hybrid content, pursuing the PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) certification can still be advantageous for graduate students. Here are a few reasons why:

1. In-depth Agile Focus: The PMI-ACP certification is solely dedicated to agile principles, practices, and methodologies. It provides a comprehensive and detailed understanding of agile frameworks such as Scrum, Kanban, Lean, etc. If you are specifically interested in specializing in agile project management or if your career goals align with agile organizations, the PMI-ACP gives you a deep dive into the agile world.

2. Broader Skill Set: While the PMP covers a wide range of project management knowledge, the PMI-ACP focuses specifically on agile practices. By attaining the PMI-ACP certification, you enhance your skill set with specialized agile knowledge and techniques. This can make you more versatile and capable of effectively managing projects using both traditional and agile approaches.

3. Competitive Advantage: Having multiple certifications demonstrates your commitment to professional development and continuous learning. Employers often value candidates who have a diverse set of certifications, as it indicates their ability to adapt to various project management methodologies. By holding both the PMP and PMI-ACP certifications, you set yourself apart from others and increase your employability in organizations that value agile methodologies.

4. Collaboration and Networking: Taking the PMI-ACP certification provides you with an opportunity to connect and collaborate with other professionals in the agile community. Engaging with like-minded individuals can be a valuable source of knowledge sharing, exchanging insights, and expanding your professional network. This can help you stay up to date with the latest trends, share experiences, and gain industry-specific insights.

Ultimately, the decision to pursue the PMI-ACP in addition to the PMP depends on your career aspirations, the sector you wish to work in, and the level of specialization you desire. Assess your long-term goals and evaluate whether the agile focus of the PMI-ACP aligns with your career path and adds value to your professional growth.
