Pick something you find very interesting. My masters required a capstone project rather than a thesis, but I spent several hundred hours producing a very detailed plan over the course of 3 months. If it wasn't something I enjoyed researching and analyzing at great length, it would have been a miserable experience.

A couple of emerging but very popular areas of research would be the practical use of AI to aid PMs in their work and the rising importance of sustainability when planning and executing projects.

I have over 150 topics if you are interested which will help to contribute to our understanding of project management. My 2024 DBA students are looking more at PMO-related topics but we have also many project management topics. The problem all new students have is they have no idea of what needs to be researched and second, once the do research a lot is never applied. In our case, we include research into all our courses and get students to present as well to share their findings.
