I've received feedback that some of my PMs try to lead technical design sessions that should be lead by technical resources.

Ray -

This is where defining or clarifying roles & responsibilities early in the life of the project (whether formally using a RAM/RACI approach or informally) can help. Also, coaching the respective PMs and providing them candid 1:1 feedback when they cross such boundaries.

However, I have been in situations where the PM's past technical expertise is actually expected to be leveraged to support the team so a lot also depends on whether you have a "whole team" skills-wise...
