A milestone chart is usually an extrapolation or subset of the content from a full schedule. I'd recommend treating your PMP journey like a project - define the scope, identify the activities, sequence & estimate their duration and then create a network diagram and schedule from them.
A simple milestone chart might contain the following...
- create plan for achieving eligibility - create study plan - achieve eligibility - apply - schedule the exam - study - take the exam
...but there could easily be variances.
- You can use the application to verify your eligibility (you can't submit it until you meet eligibility). Once you start filling out the application, it's only good for 90 days, so if you can't meet eligibility within those 90 days. your application will expire. However, there's no penalty for your application expiring. You can start again, later. Just save your info so you don't have to recreate it, the next time. - You don't have to schedule the exam before you start studying; you can start studying before you're even eligible, if you want. Taking a PMP Prep Class can be part of both studying and achieving eligibility (35 contact hours of education). Once your application is approved, you have one year to take the exam, so you can study until you're comfortable, schedule the exam, and then study some more. - If you create a study plan before achieving eligibility, it might start simple and then get refined after achieving eligibility. You don't need a detailed study plan before your application is approved, and you don't really need to spend a lot of time planning your studying. You might want to set a budget - you can go overboard on preparing and spend a lot. There are plenty of people selling stuff to help you prepare, but you don't need all of it. Saving Changes...
