I'm curious to see how you define AI.

It's not easy to answer this question. There are multiple different definitions of artificial intelligence and the "common sense" depends strictly on who answers. In addition, as we are still not sure what actual intelligence is, no matter if it is artificial or not, it is a question rather philosophical than practical.

According to John McCarthy from the Computer Science Department at Stanford University "(AI) It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable(...)"

And, if you are asking about our opinions, currently my view on the AI is very close to this definition as well.

Actually, the open question is: do we want to create machines that think and act like humans or thinking and acting rationally?

Rich,

I agree with Pawel that it is not easy to define (which means getting agreement by others). An example of the standard reply of a PM: It depends.

There is a history of definitions, in technological, philosophical, psychological, biological, educational, legal contexts.

What is intelligence at all, is it only confined to humans? No.
Is it limited to rationality, reason? No, what about emotional intelligence then.
What does artificial mean to say, is it unnatural? Is it using intuition, irrationality?

So, to answer your question, I could live with
AI is behaviour that is not human.

Rich -

I might plagiarize Thomas's brief definition and state "Artificial intelligence is any intelligence which is not demonstrated by biological entities"

I would borrow from general systems theory which attempts to find commonality in different types of systems including both natural and man-made, and describe AI as:

The use of cybernetic algorithms to simulate organismic processes for receiving, processing, and acting upon incoming information typically associated with higher brain functions. Unlike a Turing machine, where a set of instructions will always produce the same outputs (response) for the same set of inputs (stimulus), AI algorithms are not purely deterministic and exhibit multi-finality where they may produce multiple distinct outcomes from the same set of initial conditions.

I can say about AI that its nothing but similar improvement from an arithmetic calculator to excel.
Using a piece of paper with calculator for your monthly income, expense and saving then using excel template in which you just enter income and expenses and system gives you multiple analysis. Initially it`s magic now such tasks are our everyday job.
I feel, gradual understanding will make my impression of seeing magic to a logical outcome and I will and automation as a very logical sequence of actions.
Surely AI is going to disrupt project management practices.

I really like this metaphor. :)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems. These processes include learning (acquiring information and rules for using the information), reasoning (using rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions), problem-solving, perception (using sensory inputs to interpret and understand the world), and language understanding.
