If you had to choose just one document to manage an entire project with (i.e. project charter, issues log, project schedule, etc.), which document would you choose and why?

Issues log. Because everything can be included in there - examples:
Cost benefits - issue is how we justify the project in financial terms.
Plan - issue is how X resource is required to work on Y task
Comms - issue is how we inform those who need to know

etc

Every item involved in a project, if we don't have a separate plan document for it, becomes an issue, and can therefore be managed through the issue log.

As all stakeholders hate surprises, I would pick communications matrix. It helps to put everyone on same page at almost all-times!

Project charter , Stakeholder register, Communications management plan will be my top three picks!

All other essential subsidiary plans defined for that project will be my next got-to!
