My experience has varied. I'm typically the one that puts together to go-live schedule, but after that it's been a little different at some of my employers. There've been a couple where the IT Director ran the show with me steering the schedule as needed, and others where I've managed the schedule, given the go ahead on handoffs when needed, and facilitated final approval that we're done, only looking to someone in IT leadership when needing signoff that an issue has been resolved and we're either good to continue or need to roll back.

In general, it continues to be a planning & orchestration role, but specifically for go lives, I've seen:

1. Ensuring that everyone who needs to be engaged is, and that all stakeholders who need to be in the loop as the go live progresses are

2. An increased emphasis on risk management including ensuring contingency plans (e.g. rollbacks) are in place

3. Supporting the team performing the go live activities with encouragement, removal of impediments

Jennifer,
Speaking of SAP projects utilizing SAP Activate methodology, from my perspective, an article entitled "SAP Project Manager’s Guide to SAP Project Cutover" (source: Blogs SAP) offers valuable insight into SAP Cutover's stage, covering:
a) formulating a cutover strategy
b) cutover planning
c) cutover simulation/dress rehearsal
d) production cutover & go-live
e) post-cutover activities & business adoption
and the role of an SAP Project Manager and/or SAP Cutover Manager at this stage.

Here is the link to the article:

Hope this helps.

Go Live is an activity inside the project plan.

According to my experience PM needs to identify go live tasks, dependencies, artifacts and resources required. Once identify all these attributes, PM has to plan and align all the go live activities and the resources to run it smoothly on the day.
Best practice is to prepare this plan early and review it with responsible leads on each area to confirm whether all required steps are covered. Further its better to do a dry run to verify the go live plan.

as PM I have overseen cutovers. At first minute by minute executing a plan and responding to deviations, up to cancelling the cutover and rolling back the systems (e.g. if cutover takes more time and systems have to be up and running at a certain time).

Lateron and also as program manager, I installed a cutover manager but chaired the cutover decision board.
