I am currently working in an IT project environment hence I am seeking some help from this community. Does anyone have a template of an Software Requirement Specification. Also what course would you guys recommend to a project manager who is transitioning to an environment of software project.

I would suggest using the IEEE template. As for courses, that depends on your background and future plans. IT is a broad field and not just software. It could be focused on project delivery methods, systems engineering which ties closely to PM, distributed system architectures, specific programming languages, etc.

Shivram -

In addition to checking IEEE, I would suggest you first check with fellow PMs at your company as to what they have used on past projects. There might be a formal or ad hoc corporate standard template which you may need to use.

Although the IEEE is focused on systems type products, it is a go-to source for very detailed and well written standards and templates for any number of project and product level deliverables.

When I am looking for an engineering related template, I often search their content, find documents that cover the superset of every possible case, and then start paring it down to what I need. It helps prevent trying to reinvent the wheel, or miss items I would have overlooked.

They are often applicable to other product domains as well. While the technology may be different, a lot of the content is applicable generically even though it might be customized to a different context.

My first recomendation is taking a closer look to Karl Weigers paper "10 Requirements Traps to Avoid" mainly because the requirements levels. With that said, my recomendation is going to IEEE Std 1233, IEEE Std 828, IEEE Std 830. I was part of the group of authors of the PMI´s Requirements Management Practice Guide but you will not find a template inside it.

Kiron, thanks. When I googled, this came out but I thought I was mistaken as I can't relate this to the template. How is the IEEE related to the template? This is new to me so curious to know the details.
