Although the IEEE is focused on systems type products, it is a go-to source for very detailed and well written standards and templates for any number of project and product level deliverables.

When I am looking for an engineering related template, I often search their content, find documents that cover the superset of every possible case, and then start paring it down to what I need. It helps prevent trying to reinvent the wheel, or miss items I would have overlooked.

They are often applicable to other product domains as well. While the technology may be different, a lot of the content is applicable generically even though it might be customized to a different context.
Keith, this is very interesting. Thank for you for the detailed explanation - Are all those templates available for free for public?

Not everything is available for free but many of their templates, standards etc. can be found online for free. It's much like how you must pay for the PMBoK, but you can still find a lot of it referenced somewhere. At a minimum, using IEEE in the search focuses in your results on things that are technically oriented.

I found their software requirements template downloadable for free as a Word file from a university (no virus found) before I suggested it.
