Would you also know when I pay for the exam I need to schedule the date and time simultaneously? This information is unclear to me unless I missed it somewhere on the PMI site.
I could be traveling soon and I need to keep the date, time, and place flexible.

Once you apply for the credential and either get audited and pass the audit or not get audited, you'd then be informed that you can go ahead and pay. Once that has been done, you'll receive notification from PMI that you have one year to schedule your exam and that e-mail message would contain the ID you need to book the exam.
So, you can certainly wait to schedule the exam days or even weeks after you have paid.
