I am looking to schedule projects automatically, based on priority ranking.
Considering, I project manage a few hundred projects per year, with 10-15 work crews, it would be very tedious to do project dependencies for each of these. Also, some projects end up taking longer or shorter than expected, so the work crews may go to projects other than what you originally planned.
For example, lets say I have 3 work crews and 10 projects, with project lengths as follows:
Initially, crew 1 would work project 1, crew 2 work project 2, crew 3 would work project 3.
Then after 2 weeks, the first crew to finish would be crew 2. Crew 2 would go to project 4, and work that from weeks 3 to 5, since that is the next highest ranked/prioritized project.
Crew 3 would finish project 3, then go work project 5 from weeks 4 to 12.
Project 6 would start in week 5, once crew 1 finished up project 1.
The projects would continue on in order of starting the highest ranked first.
Is there any tool or software that will plot out the project dependencies automatically?
Doing this process manually would be very time consuming, and every time a project takes longer or shorter than expected, I may have to re schedule the entire thing.
Right now, for planning purposes, I am using a workaround where I tentatively connect every nth project to each other, depending on number of crews. So for example, if there were 3 crews, the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, etc projects would be connected dependencies. The 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th, etc would be linked as well. However, in reality, the order gets shuffled massively as the projects have varied completion times. Saving Changes...

Mark, I think Primavera P6 will be useful for you in this situation but I am not too sure if it can plot all dependencies for you without minimum input from your end. You can try though!
