While in other fields, AI has been used already for years with proven results, in the project management field, based on the answers I see in this forum, it seems to be at a very incipient status, and there are more news and assumptions than facts about its value.

Are we in the top of a peak of inflated expectations and going into disillusionment in the coming months?

Ricardo, AI in project management is just starting. There are lots of speculations and assumptions as to how it will evolve and how it will be incorporated in project management but its definitely not a hype. In my opinion, AI is here to stay.

In my personal opinion, based on I am researching and applying AI from 1989 up to date, AI is becoming a new buzzword. Unfortunately. The same what other things like agile or today called big data. We are surrounded of AI entities (software, hardware, etc) from long time ago. So, including it project management, we are using AI from long time ago. Nothing new below the sun. Like other type of technologies AI becomes popular because the advance of computer machines that helps to process great amount of data BUT mainly because people is providing the data for free. People is contributing to create "the matrix".

You are absolutely correct. Whereas in other fields where it is possible to get large amounts of clean data to generate accurate learning models, the uncertainty and uniqueness of individual projects combined with the common uncleanliness of source data makes it much more challenging to be useful.

This is not a new issue and it has affected use cases such as estimation tools for decades.

AI for project management is not necessarily hype, but it's important to have a realistic understanding of what AI can and cannot do in this context. AI has the potential to bring significant improvements to project management, but its effectiveness depends on various factors.

Here are some key points to consider:

Automation and Efficiency: AI can automate repetitive tasks, such as data entry, scheduling, and resource allocation, which can save time and reduce errors. This can lead to more efficient project management.

Data Analysis: AI can analyze large sets of data quickly and identify patterns, trends, and potential risks. This can help project managers make informed decisions and adjust their strategies as needed.

Predictive Analytics: AI can be used for predictive analytics to forecast project timelines and resource needs. This can aid in better planning and resource allocation.

Task Management: AI-powered project management tools can assist in tracking tasks, monitoring progress, and providing real-time updates. This can enhance team collaboration and communication.

Risk Management: AI can identify potential project risks and suggest mitigation strategies. It can also help project managers assess the impact of different decisions on project outcomes.

Personalized Recommendations: AI can provide project managers with personalized recommendations based on historical data and project-specific factors.

Natural Language Processing (NLP): NLP can be used for text analysis, facilitating better communication and understanding within project teams.

However, it's important to note that AI is not a panacea, and there are limitations to its use in project management:

Data Quality: The effectiveness of AI in project management heavily relies on the quality and availability of data. Garbage in, garbage out applies to AI as well.

Human Expertise: AI can augment human decision-making, but it doesn't replace the need for skilled project managers who can interpret AI insights and make strategic decisions.

Overhype: There is a risk of AI being overhyped as a solution to all project management problems. It's crucial to have realistic expectations and not expect AI to solve every issue.

Implementation Challenges: Integrating AI tools and systems into existing project management workflows can be challenging and may require significant investments in terms of time and resources.

In conclusion, AI has the potential to significantly enhance project management by automating tasks, providing data-driven insights, and improving decision-making. However, it's essential to approach AI with a clear understanding of its capabilities and limitations and to consider how it can complement the skills and expertise of human project managers.

AI in project management is at an early stage, with both potential and limitations. While enthusiasm exists, practical applications are still evolving. Realistic expectations are crucial as technology advances and solutions mature.

AI in project management is being rapidly adopted. I helped 3 organizations in the past year implement AI solutions in the project methodology. Let's avoid the ostrich perspective. Failure to see the facts means people are only expressing opinions.. .
