Who I Am: Adventurer, Catalyst, Storyteller
Co-author of the Agile Manifesto with 60 years’ experience as an IT manager, product manager, project manager, consultant, software developer, and agile pioneer.
Awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, from the World Agile Management Forum, September 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal.

I’ve always been an adventurer, trying out a variety of adventure sports from mountaineering to century bike racing. These sports involve taking calculated risks whose consequences are learned by experience. Likewise with my 60-year career in software development and management—I made several risky, but not reckless career pivots.

Relying on my engineering and management experience I’ve been a catalyst bringing people together— from diverse functional areas like IT, marketing, finance, and software development; and help bridge the gaps between teams and executives. Founding member of Agile Alliance. Co-founder and first president of the Agile Project Leadership Network. Advisor to Agile Leadership Journey. Executive Consultant at ThoughtWorks. Director of Cutter Consortium’s Agile Project Management practice.

Whether I’m relating mountain climbing to adapting to change, or presenting on agility to conference audiences, I rely on storytelling to provide emotional “hooks” so audiences can remember facts and figures. Author of six agile books, the latest Wild West to Agile (2023).

Hi Jim, welcome to PMI's online community! It's great to have you here - looking forward to seeing you around the online community!

1. Your name and your current role
My name is Mamdud Sayed, and I’m currently working as a Project Manager in the IT and cybersecurity domain. I’m PMP-certified, with a solid background in managing high-impact projects that sit at the intersection of infrastructure, security, and innovation.

2. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
As a kid, I had this curious mix of fascination for both science and structure. I originally wanted to be a scientist or an engineer, the kind who builds rockets or solves mysterious equations scribbled on a chalkboard. I guess I’ve always had a thing for systems—whether it's atoms or agile frameworks.

3. What are your favorite project management tools and technologies? Or ones that you’d like to learn more about?
I’m a big fan of Jira, Odoo, and MS Project—especially when combined with Power BI for reporting and data insights. Although MS Visio, Office, PowerPoint, and Excel are my go-to tools. Lately, I’ve been diving deeper into AI-enhanced PM platforms like ClickUp with automation workflows. I’d love to explore digital twin technology in project modeling and simulation for real-world applications.

4. What drew you to the project management industry? What’s kept you in it?
What pulled me in? The balance of logic and leadership. Project management isn’t just about Gantt charts—it’s about people, precision, and purpose. I love how it forces you to think both big-picture and boots-on-the-ground. What’s kept me here? The thrill of turning chaos into clarity, watching a project move from whiteboard to reality, and knowing you orchestrated it like a symphony conductor.

5. What’s your proudest accomplishment (personal or professional)?
Professionally, I’d say leading a cross-border infrastructure migration project involving multiple vendors and stakeholders—delivering it ahead of schedule and under budget—was a career-defining moment. Personally, it’s being able to support and raise a family while continuously upskilling myself and mentoring others. Holding it all together? That’s the real MVP move.

José Elias Mendes Senior Journalist São Paulo, Brazil

Hi everyone, I’m José Elias Mendes, a communications strategist and journalist based in Brazil, currently expanding my work into project management, especially in areas where storytelling, content strategy and stakeholder engagement meet.

As a kid, I wanted to be a writer (or maybe a singer, but the writing part stuck). Today, I help people and organizations to solve what seems unsolvable, through words, method, and creativity.

I’m especially interested in tools that combine communication and collaboration with clarity: Notion, Trello, Miro, Slack… I would love to learn how other project managers are integrating AI into their workflows.

What brought me to project management was the desire to structure my work in complex projects involving multiple fronts and people. I’ve always had this bridge-building spirit, and project management felt like a natural evolution of what I’ve been doing for years in editorial, strategic, and creative contexts.

Before formally entering this field, I had already been managing projects in informal ways, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, leading content strategies, and ensuring that moving parts came together smoothly. Now, I’m excited to deepen this practice with more structure, tools, and shared knowledge.

My proudest accomplishments? Tough one, but I’d say helping position two Brazilian pop culture platforms among the most read in the country, leading teams with empathy and clarity, and recently joining the Top 12 LinkedIn Creators in Journalism & Media (Brazil), according to Favikon.

Looking forward to learning with (and from!) you all ✨

Hello,
I am Patatree Sanyal(you can call me Pat :)).
I am an experienced Project and Program Delivery Manager with over 15 years in the ICT sector. I specialize in delivering end-to-end infrastructure, cloud migration, and digital transformation initiatives across Australia, the Asia-Pacific, and the U.S.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming an Indian classical dancer, having trained as a scholar in Bharatnatyam, one of India’s most renowned classical dance forms. I was drawn to the discipline, expression, and the ability to inspire through performance—values that, interestingly, also underpin my journey into project management. Leadership, coordination, and continuous learning are central to both worlds. I continue to practice and perform at various cultural events and diaspora gatherings, staying connected to my passion.

I’m passionate about developing strategies around cloud migrations and digital transformations. Lately, I’ve been exploring how AI and automation can enhance risk forecasting and delivery efficiency—an area in which I’m excited to deepen my expertise.
What drew me to project management was the opportunity to turn ideas into outcomes. What has kept me here is the ability to empower cross-functional teams, solve complex problems, and deliver tangible value.
One of my proudest moments was leading a critical cloud migration program for a major Australian financial institution—delivered on time, under budget, and with zero unplanned downtime.
On a personal note, I recently relocated from Sydney, Australia to Maryland, USA, with my family and am currently seeking new opportunities in Project Management. I’m also proud to have completed two postgraduate degrees while caring for my newborn—a rewarding and transformative phase of life.
Looking forward to learning from and contributing to this vibrant community!
Welcome to PMI's online community, Pat! Thanks for joining us and taking the time to introduce yourself. It's great to learn more about you.

Wishing you all the best as you settle into life in Maryland, and looking forward to learning from you as well!
