In the future, Artificial Intelligence will advance even more, automatizing a significant quantity of activities that will no longer be executed by humans. ¿As a Project Manager, what are the activities or processes you consider can be never replaced by AI? Saving Changes...
I think activities which require a high degree of emotional intelligence such as team building and personal feedback will always be in the domain of the PM. Computers can use facial recognition and body language cues to detect emotional responses, but a machine without emotions cannot truly understand or share the emotions of others. Saving Changes...
Any activities which involve the "power skills" are unlikely to be taken over by non-humans until non-humans replace our stakeholders and team members!

Never say never.
A machine without emotions can very well understand the emotions of others and learn how to react to them. There is a whole bunch of AI tools available in the realm of emotional AI.
I would see it from the other side: We have projects because humans have problems and see an uncertain future. Are there projects without humans in need of them? Do machines fear the future? Certainly not. Saving Changes...

Hi Veronica,
As a seasoned Project- and Program Manager, I approach the intersection of artificial intelligence and project management with a pragmatic perspective. AI's capabilities to optimize, automate, and enhance processes are undeniably transformative. However, there are inherent aspects of project management that are irreducibly human and likely resistant to full automation.
The activities and processes that I believe AI will not supplant include:
Leadership and Motivational Roles: The nuances of leadership—such as inspiring team members, cultivating a shared vision, and nurturing motivation—are quintessentially human traits. These elements rely on emotional intelligence, empathy, and interpersonal skills that AI cannot authentically replicate.
Stakeholder Management and Negotiation: Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, understanding their unique needs, and negotiating compromises require a level of social understanding and subtlety that AI needs to improve. These are deeply relational activities rooted in human psychology and culture.
Complex Decision-Making: While AI can support decision-making with data-driven insights, the ultimate responsibility of making tough, high-stakes decisions—with all their ethical implications and the need to balance diverse human factors—remains a distinctly human accountability.
Creative Problem-Solving: AI can identify patterns and provide solutions based on data. However, creativity is essential for out-of-the-box thinking, especially in unprecedented scenarios where past data might not offer insight.
Change Management: The process of managing change, particularly in guiding human teams through transitions, relies on an understanding of human behavior, organizational culture, and group dynamics. AI cannot control the human aspect of change, which is often unpredictable and emotionally charged.
Crisis Management: In times of crisis, human intuition, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and ethical considerations come to the forefront. AI may assist with scenario planning and response strategies, but humans are better equipped to handle the unforeseen nuances of crises.
In my professional experience, integrating AI in project management should be considered an augmentation rather than a replacement of human skills. As such, while AI can take over more administrative and analytical tasks, the essence of project management—leading teams, making nuanced decisions, and driving innovation through human insights—will continue to be the domain of skilled professionals like us. AI will enhance our roles but not extinguish the need for human oversight and intervention.
