Hello,
I would like to begin the journey of earning the PMP certification. But where do I start?
Is it best to sign-up for a test prep course or is there an option to learn the information and then a enroll in a test prep course? I feel as though I need to review and learn before worrying about the exam. I do have on the job experience in managing projects of various sizes for over 15 years, but never formal PM training. I agree with Rami. If you have significant experience in PM, most of what you will be taught in the course will probably be familiar to you although you may have learned different terminology for the same things at your employer(s). A self paced course can help reveal where you need to focus for the exam, and where you don't need to waste much time on concepts you understand well.
You can also find some free online practice tests for the same purpose. You will have to memorize some formulas like EVM, and they may still have questions related to process groups as they are organized by PMI which I found was both time consuming and a waste of time professionally. The good news is that you only have to pass the exam once and you can look things up you don't remember if/when you need them in your profession. Saving Changes...
I'd recommend starting by downloading the certification handbook and the Exam Content Outline from PMI's website and read both of those thoroughly.
As you indicate you don't have formal PM training, you will need to meet the 35 contact hours requirement, so a PMP prep course is a good way to do so while also helping you prepare for what you need to study.
Finally, you could consider (before taking a prep course) doing a good quality practice exam to give you a baseline on how much do (or don't) know.
