I have a team member that is interested in getting the CAPM certification. She's taking a course to get the required training hours, but has asked me how much time she should invest in studying before taking the test. I have a PMP, not a CAPM, so I am unsure of what answer to give her. I spent about 6 months studying for the PMP exam, but is that much study time needed for the CAPM exam, especially if she is taking a boot camp type course for it. I appreciate any thoughts from those that have that certification. Thank you.

Hi Shauna, i have my own training program and i help people to get the PMP and CAPM Certification. For CAPM Exam if your team member has the knowledge with the boot camp, in 5-6 weeks it's possible.

CAPM
90 days from cero (Course+Simulator)
45 days (Only Simulator)

PMP
180 days from cero (Course+Simulator)
90 days (Only Simulator)

Shauna, it is not a one-size-fits all answer because it is different from one candidate to another but on average, being a knowledge based exam, candidates normally take anywhere between 3 to 5 months to prepare.

Vriti, for study plan, I suggest the following:

1) Read through the Exam Content Outline (ECO), PMBOK 6th Edition (Including the Agile Extension) and then read the PMBOK 7th edition.

2) Go through Rita Mulchay’s Exam Prep book latest edition. This is one of the best resources for exam preparation.

3) After you are done, purchase the Simulator Package through PM Prep Cast and practice as much as you can. This is a great simulator and resource for questions that mimic the real exam.

4) If you want a course to fulfill your educational Hours then check Joseph Phillips on Udemy. He is a PMI ATP and great instructor or check out PMI's self-paced course in the PMI Store.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Vriti you have to consider in the same way:
- The Process Group Guide
- A Minimum Viable Simulator
- Accountability Management, if required, your personalized work plan

Good luck!

Maybe preparation for the CAPM exam varies depending on the actual PM knowledge, and the daily hours dedicated to study.
I recommend Rita Mulcahy's certification prep, it's a good option to acquire PM Knowledge at your own pace, and is updated to the latest exam. Visit this link:

Dear Shauna,

Advising a team member on preparing for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) exam, especially when your own experience is with the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, involves considering the differences in the complexity and depth of these two certifications. The CAPM, while not as extensive as the PMP, still requires a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of project management as outlined in the PMBOK Guide.

Key Considerations for CAPM Exam Preparation:
Understanding of PMBOK Guide: The CAPM exam is heavily based on the PMBOK Guide. Ensure your team member is familiar with its content and structure.

Duration of Study:

For the CAPM, a study period of 2-3 months is often recommended, but this can vary based on individual learning pace and prior knowledge.
If she is taking an intensive boot camp course, this might reduce the amount of additional study time required.
Study Plan:

Encourage a structured study plan. Regular, consistent study periods are more effective than sporadic, lengthy sessions.
She should focus on understanding key concepts, processes, and terminologies used in the PMBOK Guide.
Practice Exams:

Taking practice exams is crucial. It not only helps in understanding the exam pattern but also in identifying areas where more study is needed.
Advise her to review the explanations for both correct and incorrect answers in practice tests to deepen her understanding.
Review and Revision:

Regular review of learned material is important to reinforce knowledge.
She should allocate time for revision in her study plan, especially focusing on areas where she feels less confident.
Peer Study Groups:

Participating in study groups or discussions can be helpful. It provides different perspectives and clarifications on complex topics.
Balancing Work and Study:

If she’s working while studying, advise her to find a balance that doesn’t lead to burnout. Quality of study can be more beneficial than quantity.
Tailored Advice Based on Your Experience:
Share your experience of studying for the PMP, emphasizing the importance of understanding core concepts and regular study.
Offer insights into effective study techniques, time management, and stress management during exam preparation.
Conclusion:
While the CAPM is less intensive than the PMP, a well-structured and disciplined approach to study is still crucial. The duration of study can be shorter than what is typically required for the PMP, especially with a focused training course. Encourage her to assess her own understanding regularly and adjust her study plan accordingly. Your support and insights from your PMP journey can be invaluable in guiding her through this process.

BR,

Markus
