Erica HallProject Manager| University of Nevada, RenoNv, United States
I am searching for a mentor. I earned my PMP in fall of 2020 and was laid off a couple months later. For the past 2.5+ years I have been a Project Manager at the University of Nevada, Reno providing support to Academic Faculty for their grant-funded research efforts. I have come to realize this is a fairly unique field to be a practicing PM in, and I am the inaugural person to hold my role. It is the goal of my leadership, and myself, to eventually grow my team (I'm currently a one-woman show!) and provide robust and multi-faceted support to faculty across campus.
Part of the responsibilities and expectations of my position is to create, define and refine the processes, policies and methodologies to use across campus. Given that no one at my institution has experience with PM in this environment, I do feel like I'm flying blind sometimes, and coming up against decades of ingrained practices and inter-office politics.
Unfortunately, my local PMI chapter does not offer mentoring cohorts, so I am looking outside my region for support. I would be grateful to find a mentor who has experience with building a PMO and is willing/excited to work with someone who is relatively early in their career. Thank you! Saving Changes...

Erica, as a PMO Certified Consultant, I have expertise in building PMOs and I provide mentoring and consultation as part of my business at RMK Coaching. If this is what you’re looking for, then please touch base with me on LinkedIn and I can then provide you with more details regarding fees, schedule, etc.
However, if you’re looking for free mentorship, then I suggest you contact your PMI local chapter in Nevada and check with them. Most chapter have mentorship programs twice a year either for free or for a nominal fee.
I've setup one PMO and taken over another as well as consulted to many PMO leaders over my consulting career so I'd be happy to help - send me a private message and we can take it from there.
Exploring beyond your local PMI chapter for mentorship is a smart move. While formal mentoring might not be available locally, engaging in events and networking can lead to valuable connections.
