GenAI and Decentralized Digital Identification: Have Efficiency Gains Outweighed Ethics?

Emerging technology can positively impact and disrupt organizations, improve productivity, reduce operating costs, enhance security, etc. But we're also learning about unfortunate misuse of generative AI as it progresses towards decentralized digital identification. One example in recent news is faulty facial recognition. Has the ethics line been crossed? If it has not, how can technologists balance efficiency gains against protection of personal identifying information?
