There is only one definition for the formula itself, however, the difference is in what a benefit actually is so you need to be cautious when you define a benefit that you will measure.

And even the definition of costs needs to be consistent - in some cases, folks look purely at the project lifecycle costs whereas in other cases the ongoing operational costs over a set time period are also included.

To add onto Kiron's point, when we ask that type of question to the Finance department, the next question is typically "Current year or future year dollars?"
