What are you going to do differently to successfully deliver AI projects?

In my personal experience what I did from more than 20 years ago is delivering solutions where AI was a key component. For example, what today is called smart manufacturing or manufacturing 4.0. In this type of solutions (solution = "the thing" to be created + "the way" to create it) we used business analyst and project manager roles talking in generic way because most of them where run using agile approach so the role name differs. At the end, again in my personal experience, nothing different no matter the components involved in the solution.

If question is related to AI projects then the key differentiator is learning about AI solution we will be targetting. The scope is really huge when we talk about AI landscape of projects and the knowledge requirement is different. For example a be it NLP, computer vision or algorithms based implementation of projects each require different tools and evolving trends in those domains. A successful AI project not only requires knowing trend but also keeping adept with innovations happening in those areas.

If the question is really related to use of AI tools in project delivery, I believe, The fundamental principles of using project management maynot change and AI tools will just help in query solutions.

It should be confirmed that the risk register is always controlled with a suitable mitigation plan to ensure deliver the project safely and successfully.

Thanks all for the great feedback.

After some subsequent discussions and demos around AI delivery Im even more convinced that core delivery fundamentals are critical to success. What is branded an AI Chat GPT "hallucination" is really more of a Severity 1 functional bug.

All the more reason to focus on delivery fundamentals...

Kevin,

I agree with you, Sergio, and Kotresh.

The project can use the same concepts, methods, and frameworks as if AI were not within its scope.

It should be staffed with someone knowledgeable about AI (as it would be implementing SAP with someone knowing about SAP).

Not sure that hallucination is a bug or rather a feature that will prevail after the project finished. You might consider including some reconciliation, some functions that can recognize hallucinations and alert users.

Hello Kevin, a timely question on fellow practitioners on the topic of AI. My view echoes those of other contributors in gaining a better understanding of how in-house or third-party AI modules be trained, used, interpreted, applied, and ultimately interpreted in upcoming projects.

As a PM, I'm reading about AI to be able to understand at least the basics and have some vocabulary in case I'm assigned an AI-related project. :-)
