Hello
thinking about a career change. I've experience in two industries over the past 18 years. Higher / Further Education and Web Development and Consultancy. I've no formal project management qualifications but managed projects while working in the web development and internet marketing sector.
I've taken some online quizzes and they say I'd make a better product manager than a project manager. So my question is, what qualification should I go for and how to transition out of the higher education sector ? Thank you all in advance Saving Changes...
Tomas,
If you are looking at a move to project management, I would pursue the PMP since that requires both experience in PM, and formal training. It it shows on your resume that you can speak the language of PM and know about standard practices rather than just how you did things in your last jobs.
As for a transition, I would look for larger and growing companies. They often have a learning development department to up-skill employees and make new-hires productive more quickly. In my own experience with training development projects, the training department were the experts on how to manage a course development. They work with product specialists to understand the product and what critical skills are required for the employees.
As you work more training projects, you will see different parts of how the business works and can more easily move laterally from there. Saving Changes...

If you ask me, the world is searching for solution manager of something like that where solution is equal to "the thing" to be created plus "the way" to create it. Putting this in terms of the PMI is a mix between business analyst role and project manager role. My recommendation is taking a look to both related documentation inside the PMI. I'm not sure I qualify for the PMP , as there is a criteria of having work experience in a project management setting. I've been lecturing for the past 8 years in computer subjects Saving Changes...

Tomas,
even if you go for product management, I think project management would be valuable for you. They can be seen as 2 sides of 1 medal.
As for PM experience, as you said you were doing lecturing, consulting, and web development, looking at these experiences through the lens of the PMP ECO, and interpretating those differently, might result in having enough experience for doing the PMP. Saving Changes...
