Why do Project Management Offices (PMOs) utilize a complex system for conducting retrospectives? Should retrospectives be conducted at project completion or during the execution stage of the project?

What factors contribute to the intricacies involved in the retrospective process within the PMO? Do you have any suggestions for simplifying?

Mohammad, Ive been managing construction projects for the past 20 years now, and this was never a complex activity. We normaly have weekly or bi-weekly retrospective meetings on-site with the team to identify areas of improvements, areas of satisfaction, enhance the way to monitor safety, quality, constructibility. A representative of the PMO can attend those meetings, but those should be primarily held by the individuals running the job on site.

Mohammad -

At core, a retrospective is just a self-examination feedback loop. How we go about doing it depends on the context but if it is not team-focused and team-driven, it loses value. And the cadence should also be defined by the nature of the work being done. Frameworks like Scrum advocate retrospectives on a frequent (per sprint) basis, but the frequency should be defined by when it will produce value.
