Management consultant is a generic term, Jean Eric, and could refer to someone providing advice or consulting service across any aspect of management including organizational structure, team development, policies and procedures and more.

A PM consultant is usually focused within the PM domain - either leading projects and programs or helping to elevate project management capabilities within an organization.

Both could be performed by independent (solo) consultants or by employees of a consulting firm.

Two different areas!

PM focuses on projects, whereas management consultant focuses on a wider area like the whole organization management.

Although consultants in project management are experts in overseeing particular projects, consultants in management provide a more comprehensive approach to enhancing the performance, strategy, and effectiveness of organizations in all areas. The breadth and complexity of each role's tasks vary, yet both are essential to helping businesses accomplish their goals.

The key distinction between a project management consultant and a management consultant lies in the focus and scope of their work within the realm of business consulting. A project management consultant specializes in guiding and overseeing the successful execution of specific projects within an organization. Their expertise centers on project management methodologies, tools, and techniques, aiming to deliver projects on time, within scope, and within budget.

Project management is narrowly focused on projects, while management consulting is more broadly focused, such as on the management of the whole firm.

General management is dedicated to the ongoing operations and long-term goals of an organization, ensuring its sustained functionality. In contrast, project management is a distinct discipline centered on attaining specific objectives within a predetermined timeframe and scope. Both are integral for the overall success and advancement of an organization.

The main difference between a project management consultant and a management consultant lies in their areas of focus and expertise.

Project Management Consultant:

1.Specializes in overseeing and managing specific projects from initiation to completion.
2. Focuses on project planning, execution, monitoring, and controlling to ensure successful delivery within scope, budget, and schedule.
3.Provides expertise in project management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
4.Works closely with project teams to streamline processes, resolve issues, and mitigate risks.
5.Typically hired for short-term engagements to address project-specific challenges or to improve overall project management capabilities within an organization.

Management Consultant:

1. Offers strategic advice and guidance to organizations to improve overall performance, efficiency, and effectiveness.
Focuses on broader business areas such as organizational structure, operations, strategy, finance, marketing, and human resources.
2. Provides insights, recommendations, and solutions to address complex business problems and drive organizational change.
3.Works with stakeholders at various levels of the organization to analyze current practices, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement strategic initiatives.
4. Engagements may range from short-term projects to long-term partnerships, depending on the scope and objectives of the consulting assignment.

Bottom Line:
While both types of consultants may collaborate on projects within organizations, their primary focus and areas of expertise differentiate them in terms of their roles and responsibilities.
