I am interested in the PMI-CP. Should I achieve the PMP certificate first?

Mark, the short answer is No. Being a PMP is not a prerequisite to the PMI-CP so if you're working in the cosntruction field, and looking for a construction specific credential, then PMI-CP is a good fit but if you'e looking for a more general PM credential (not industry specific), then PMP is definitely a good option. It all depends on your career goals and path!

In my opinion, obtaining a PMI-CP certification typically involves a longer process due to additional requirements that need to be fulfilled, whereas the knowledge gained from PMP certification can be applied in various situations. Before the introduction of PMI-CP, the construction sector generally accepted PMP certification for project managers. Therefore, personally, I would recommend starting with PMP certification. Not only is the certification process less complex, but it also serves as a gold standard in project management, with the potential to transition to different sectors. Just my two cents.
