Hello! I am a new member in this community and I am looking forward for any guidance related to passing the PMP exam. I am currently taking a project management certification course and I have two classes remaining.Hoping to hear more from people that have done the exam recently and the tips of what I should do to pass it. I have never talked to anyone that have challenged the exam and passed. All the people I have met have taken the exam and failed; they all say it's super hard.

Some great advice so far. To add to this, I found it really helpful to memorize the diagrams in the PMBOK that related to the knowledge areas and process groups. I used flash cards and created matching games for myself to recreate these diagrams. This and taking sample exams really helped. A big aspect of the exam is time management, so taking timed sample exams is a great way to train yourself so that you don't fall behind on the exam.

Very helpful, I will note that on time management and very important you reminded me to memorize diagrams. I hope they are not so difficult diagrams, right now I am doing a Tonardo diagram for my class and I can tell you it's not a piece of a cake!

Ruth, here is what I suggest you do:

1) Read through the Exam Content Outline (ECO), PMBOK 6th Edition (Including the Agile Extension as lots of questions are Agile / Hybrid based) and then read the PMBOK 7th edition. I believe both editions are relevant to the exam.

2) Go through Rita Mulchay’s Exam Prep book, I think its 11th edition now, but double check. This is one of the best resources for exam preparation.

3) After you are done, purchase the Simulator Package through PM Prep Cast and practice as much as you can. This is a great simulator and resource for questions that mimic the real exam.

4) If you want a course to fulfill your 35 Hours then check Joseph Phillips on Udemy. He is a PMI ATP and great instructor or check out PMI's self-paced course in the PMI Store.

Hope this helps - Let me know if you have further questions - Good Luck!

Hello,

I just took and preliminarily passed the PMP yesterday. I took the required 35 hour ILT course and just purchased the PMI Study Hall Essentials package and just took the practice exams for a week leading up to the exam. The questions on the practice exams were similar to what was on the actual exam. I've been doing project and program management for roughly 15 years without the formal certification, so that may have helped my experience with the exam. Hope this helps

Rules of thumb, no more than that after teaching exam preparation coursed from long time:
1-remember that questions are situational questions. It has no sense "to memorize" the PMBOK or others. Understand the dynamic to understand in what point of the process you are when you try to answer a question.
2-to answer a question remember that the answer is what "the PMI" expect as an answer in the framework of the PMBOK. It does not matter if in your work life it does not applies or you do not agree with the PMBOK proposal.
3-make tons of exam questions. 3-4 times the amount of questions in the exam. When you get 80% or more into each tried then you are ready.
4-you can use the same exam simulation several times because you will surprise about may be you will get different results each time.
4-CRITICAL: read carefully and understand the Content Outline document. It is the key success factor because inside it you have the dynamic of project management from the point of view, between other things, the certification exam.
Hope it helps and go for it!
