What are your thoughts on incorporating sustainability components into (startup) business plans?

From my observations, investors typically show less interest in sustainability aspects unless they offer immediate benefits to the organization. What's your perspective on this?

Depends on the nature of the product/service and your target audience. If your target audience are green-oriented, then they might be much more interested.

However, even if they are not, so long as sustainability is shown as something which is enhancing and not taking away from the core business case, there shouldn't be a concern raised. It should not be a case of sustainability OR profit but rather profit and sustainability together.

First of all, we need to stay clear about what sustainability means for us and mainly for the organization where you will run an initiative. Unfortunatelly there is a lot of confusion. With that said, from more than 20 years ago, i am leading initiatives in lot of different domains including it hugh companies and the sustainability component is always there. The reasons? We can list lot of reasons but the point is they are including the topic. With that said, I will talk about my personal way of working: I learn a lot about the topic and I always try to make some kind of influence to incorporate it in the initiatives I have the pleasure to work. But lot of hypocrisy is outside there. For example, few people know how are the impacts on this matter because we are using cel phones, the internet, AI, etc. Then, is a boarder item to discuse. Some than others like ethic.

Chitranshu, sustainability initiatives show immediate benefits in rare cases only. Normally the sustainability goals are medium to long term goals (At least on our construction projects) and we normally add them to our business plan. The view of sustainability is changing and more client are entertaining sustainability on most of their projects these days!

An often neglected feature of sustainability is its ability to reduce risk and increase resilience inside a business, which can have a substantial long-term impact on investor interest. While immediate gains may appeal to investors, the strategic relevance of sustainability in mitigating environmental, regulatory, and social risks cannot be overstated. Sustainable practices frequently result in a more strong and adaptive business model, capable of better managing future uncertainties and regulatory changes than those that do not prioritize these issues. This resilience can result in a more stable investment over time, appealing to investors who are becoming more conscious of the long-term hazards connected with non-sustainable business practices. As public awareness and governmental demands on sustainability rise, companies with strong sustainability commitments are expected to experience increased brand loyalty and competitive advantage, contributing to their long-term profitability and investor appeal.
