I read a book - Awaken the Giant Within - by Tony Robbins. Although the book does not speak explicitly about EI, it touches upon aspects of emotional intelligence as part of personal growth. In almost 2 decades of my professional life, I had co-workers with different temperaments. Few of them were extremely cautious about losing their autonomy - so extracting information from such people was very difficult, some of my co-workers were egoistic - so had to resort to tactics like praising them, and appearing to agree with them before getting the work done, some of them were very passionate about their language - me being multi-lingual helped me many times in establishing a connection and extracting the work from them.
These were some of the examples. Can someone please confirm if these can be considered instances of using EI? I want to understand this concept of EI. Please share your experience of using EI in your Workplace.

All four elements of EI are applicable in the work place to the role of a PM.

The two "self" components will be necessary for a PM to understand their own strengths, weaknesses and default behaviors as well as to control how they respond to situations, especially the unexpected ones. This is critical in terms of modeling appropriate behaviors to the team members and when dealing with challenging stakeholders.

Social awareness and relationship management are crucial in all aspects of interpersonal activity - whether it is empathizing with a team member who is having a challenging day, negotiating a tough situation with a functional manager or building bridges with key stakeholders.

The PMs who exhibit a high degree of EI tend to be more effective at the people aspects of project management which, after all, are most important in determining overall project success. They also tend to be better at building higher performing teams.

Ashwin,
My first book that I read about EI was: Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ" by Daniel Goleman. He explores the components of EI such as self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills,...all those should be cultivated by project management profesionals.

Rami Kaibni Do you remember that there was here a WIKI and both of us starting writing about the importance of EI? Is that still a thing...

Mayte Mata-Sivera - Thanks for responding.
I came across the term EI first time in the mid-2000s. I have read that book by David Goleman on Oct-08-2018. The concept of EI and EQ caught my attention as I saw it started getting more focus than IQ. This was one of the reasons for me to read Awaken the Giant Within.

Ashwin, I totally agree with Kiron and not sure I can add much except providing reassurance that EI is probably one of the most important soft skills that a PM should have and its the most difficult to acquire as it takes so many years of experience to reach to a high level of EI. In your case, what you did apply could definitely be considered as EI.

Hello Ashwin,
Asking good questions is a critical component of Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

Good questions focus on what matters, invite careful thought, and give people room to respond (Amy Edmondson, the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School).

Invite Participation: Ask Good Questions
A) To Broaden the Discussion
• What do others think?
• What are we missing?
• What other options could we consider?
• How would our competitor approach this?
• Who has a different perspective?

B) To Deepen the Discussion
• What leads you to think so?
• What's the concern that you have about that?
• How would that work in action?
• Can you explain that further?
• What do you think might happen if we did X?
