Better reporting increases visibility and accountability which typically result in better performance. Reliable project records are great tools to reference for lessons learned and benchmarking. So overall, I'd say that the increase in reporting has been great for the industry.
On the other hand, as someone who has largely been client rep side of the business. I think there is room for improvement in terms of data and file management. It's one thing to report on active projects and another thing to properly archive that information for future reference. Saving Changes...

The growing emphasis on reporting in construction projects over the last two decades has undeniably bolstered project visibility, but whether this heightened demand for progress reporting and KPI tracking translates to improved project performances or merely adds to the workload of Project Managers is a pertinent question.
Regular monitoring of project performance serves as a crucial tool for detecting deviations from the plan and initiating corrective actions in a timely manner. The exponential advancement of technology, particularly in the realm of the built environment, has catalyzed this trend, fostering an environment where reporting progress and assessing project performance are becoming increasingly sophisticated and streamlined.
However, amidst this reporting requirements, it's imperative to recognize that the true value lies not just in collecting data, but in leveraging technology to extract actionable insights. By harnessing innovative tools and analytical platforms, project managers can not only streamline the reporting process but also gain deeper, more meaningful insights into project dynamics, enabling them to make informed decisions with greater efficiency.
Ultimately, the adoption of technology should aim to alleviate the burden on project managers, empowering them to focus their efforts on strategic initiatives rather than being bogged down by administrative tasks. Organizations that embrace this shift and leverage technology to work smarter, not harder, are poised to not only meet the demands of an increasingly competitive market but also drive tangible improvements in project performance and overall efficiency.

Agree with you Everett. I am confident the current technological advancements in the construction industry (AI, Cloud solutions) will certainly alleviate the project managers and also solve Claudeen's worry about archiving and future referencing (lessons learned sessions; a basis for future estimations, etc).

John, as someone who has been working in the construction industry for over 20 years now, I would say there are advantages and disadvantages to the increased reporting requirements. On one side, proper reporting can enhance visibility, accountability, early issue detection, improve communication and support evidence-based decision making but on the other hand, it can increase admin burden, distract people from doing core tasks, and exposing the stakeholders to information overload.
Every project is unique, so you need to evaluate the project and stakeholders needs, evaluate the pros and cons, and come up with a reporting structure that best fits your project. Saving Changes...

Reporting is very much needed. As it shows the progress of the project to the sponsor & other key stakeholders.
It is better to create a simple dynamic dashboard using none other than Microsoft Excel. It could be a one-time activity.
But it helps in the long term. These types of dynamic dashboards help us to analyze project data and make informed decisions. Saving Changes...

My recommendation is to use one of the key drivers to gain agility that was put in practice next to 1998 when the use of the internet and the associated technologies were cheaper: move the backend to the frontend. It does mean, put the reporting creation in hands of the people that request it. Today you have lot of free of cost tools. For example, Google Analytics. Users are "the owners" of the data they generate then give them the responsability to decide what to do with their data. Saving Changes...
