We live in a rapidly evolving world and during the past few years, the world went through unprecedented circumstances that significantly changed the way we do things. That said, the construction industry is facing many challenges to date.

What are some of the challenges you are facing on your construction projects?

Political and regulatory uncertainty is a big one. Sudden policy changes can impact labor confidence, making it harder to retain people, while trade restrictions and export/import controls continue to disrupt material availability and pricing. That uncertainty often cascades into scheduling risk and cost escalation on construction projects.

True. It is especially tough to assess risks with this high level of uncertainty. It is slowly getting better as the world normalizes again.

The construction industry still faces a lot of common challenges like cost overruns, delays, labor shortages, supply chain issues, regulatory compliance, quality control, and communication gaps between teams. Every project seems to deal with at least a few of these, whether it’s unexpected site conditions, materials taking longer to arrive, or changes in scope from clients. To kick-off this discussion thread, I will share some of the challenges we are facing on our projects:

1. Labor Shortages: Difficulty in finding skilled labor and experienced professionals.

2. Cost Overruns: Fluctuating material prices.

3. Sustainability and Environmental Concerns: Meeting stringent environmental regulations. Most jurisdictions are issuing new Step Codes.

4. Technology Adoption: Slow adoption of new technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), drones, and AI tools which hinders efficiency and innovation.

5. Complex Regulations: Navigating complex legal and regulatory frameworks at local, provincial, and federal levels.

6. Supply Chain Disruptions: Impact on material availability and project timelines up to date.

Thank you all for your feedback and to Rami's initiative.

I would like to add the following challenges due to lack and/or incompleteness of:

1)- Clear scope definition at the early stages of the design phase, due to time and budget constraints.

2)- Key stakeholders identification, having great influence and impact on scope definition and tradeoffs;

thus leading to potential modifications, cost and time overruns.

3)- Risks identification at the early stage of the design phase, and the absence of risk management and mitigation plan, due to both qualified risk experts and/or budget constraints.

4)- Effective communication plan.

5)- Efficient constructability reviews, due to lack of qualified resources.
