We live in a rapidly evolving world and during the past few years, the world went through unprecedented circumstances that significantly changed the way we do things. That said, the construction industry is facing many challenges to date.

To kick-off this discussion thread, I will share some of the challenges we are facing on our projects:

1. Labor Shortages: Difficulty in finding skilled labor and experienced professionals.

2. Cost Overruns: Fluctuating material prices.

3. Sustainability and Environmental Concerns: Meeting stringent environmental regulations. Most jurisdictions are issuing new Step Codes.

4. Technology Adoption: Slow adoption of new technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), drones, and AI tools which hinders efficiency and innovation.

5. Complex Regulations: Navigating complex legal and regulatory frameworks at local, provincial, and federal levels.

6. Supply Chain Disruptions: Impact on material availability and project timelines up to date.

Thanks, Rami, for suggesting the discussion topic. In addition to your list, I believe we all face challenges such as funding constraints, inadequate risk assessment, and mitigation strategies.

Key project challenges include labor shortages, cost overruns, strict environmental regulations, slow tech adoption (BIM, drones, AI), complex legal frameworks, and supply chain disruptions affecting materials and timelines.

Thank you all for your feedback and to Rami's initiative.

I would like to add the following challenges due to lack and/or incompleteness of:

1)- Clear scope definition at the early stages of the design phase, due to time and budget constraints.

2)- Key stakeholders identification, having great influence and impact on scope definition and tradeoffs;

thus leading to potential modifications, cost and time overruns.

3)- Risks identification at the early stage of the design phase, and the absence of risk management and mitigation plan, due to both qualified risk experts and/or budget constraints.

4)- Effective communication plan.

5)- Efficient constructability reviews, due to lack of qualified resources.

You've covered the major ones, with "Slow Technology Adaptation" being a particularly frustrating one across the board.

I hear you, Claudeen. The resistance we face when proposing to utilize technology can sometimes be demotivating.

Despite having little work experience in the field of discussion, my curiosity to know has led me to comment on it, so pardon my lack of knowledge.

As I have seen in my surroundings, lack of communication and having less or no interpersonal skills makes individuals fall behind in the work, which may be insignificant at first glance. Still, it plays a massive role in this field.

Akash, there is no need to apologize. On the contrary, thank you for your contribution. No one knows everything and we all learn from one another.

Soft skills including effective communication contributes to 75% of what we do and use in our day to day job so they are super important, much more than technical skills, at least in my opinion.

Construction Site Safety!

The state of this is horrific!

Q. Why has it not been raised up in plain sight within engineering, construction, and other related societies?
Cheers,
Bill

Totally agree, Bill. Safety is still one of the top challenges and concerns in the industry. I believe this has to do with the mindset.

True. It is especially tough to assess risks with this high level of uncertainty. It is slowly getting better as the world normalizes again.
