I have recently acquired responsibility for a web project that had no standards of any kind. I am working to gain project control by establishing a formal schedule, code reviews, standards, etc. One of the sets of standards I want is UI design standards.

I have two questions: 1) Is this a good idea? and 2) Is it feasible?

I am getting the impression from the team that it is monumentous and I agree even though I have emphasized that we will minimize the initial scope.

If you know of any web-based UI design standards or guidelines I'd love to review them. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Web projects are famous for NOT having
established methodology, standards, and
so on, that said, I would suggest 1st
reading the book "Web Project Management"
(ISBN 1-55860-678-5) before taking any
action on development of standards. What
ever actions you do then take, please 1st
consider business need, culture, resources
at hand, and your web project's goal
before spending too much time on standards.

One other recommendation "THINK TOP DOWN"!
