There is no one best timeline. The best approach depends on the context of the project.

Also, you are likely to find multiple views required of schedule information to address the different informational needs of your stakeholders. A Gantt chart might work for one whereas a milestone table is as much detail as another requires.

Adriele, I do agree with Keith. The best template is the one that works best for your project. Normally Gantt Charts work well for majority of the projects and you can tweak them to show different things.

If there is a best template, it demands our best efforts to explore and understand the available solutions. Until we reach that level, I suggest we continue learning, exploring, and embracing trial and error. Time will ultimately reveal the most effective approach. After all, every project manager needs to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all template. Every project is unique, even if it may share similarities. No two projects are identical.
