Volunteering for Project Management Experience

I transitioned into Project Management in 2019. Got an advanced diploma in PM, taken several courses here on PMIn and passing (😁) my CAPM in April 2024. Currently enrolled in an MBA with PM

So I have really dived into the learning aspect of the career switch. My challenge is finding Project Management volunteer opportunities so I can get my feet wet and get some experience working on real projects.

Any ideas where to begin?

👏🏽👏🏽 congrats Valentine, you can volunteer to support women groups whose capacity in developing project business proposal is a challenge. So many opportunities as well to support CSOs with your capacity.

I'd check with your local PMI chapter for volunteer opportunities with it or with partner organizations. You could also approach an NGO or any other not-for-profit association which is addressing a cause which you are interested in as they would always have need of such assistance.

Hello Kiron Bondale I had not thought of checking with my local chapter. That's a good idea! I am also visiting some NGOs this coming week

Valentine, I do agree with Kiron's suggestion regarding approaching your PMI local chapter. Most chapters have lots of great and rewarding opportunities. Alternatively, you can check PMI's VRMS under your profile and engage with Virtual volunteer opportunities with PMI. Good luck with your CAPM exam!

What domain do you have general knowledge about? Try to find a role working in a project on this domain and start applying project management in the project not matter other do not do that. Make it visible.
