Do you believe that to be an effective PM, one needs to know the industry and technology they are going to deliver.

Well it depends where they are coming into the process. It helps to have industry experience for sure. However, I have conducted many projects in industries that I had no prior experience. However, I always entered the process at the beginning so I had time to learn the basics long before implementation efforts were to take place. With that said, I believe there is the human factor to be considered. Credibility is an emotional thing. For a PM to be successful they must be credible. Having a prior track record of success in an industry or functional area can add a lot to a person's credibility out of the blocks.

If a PM does not have a good handle on the business and industry they should augment their plan to allow some time to achieve a working knowledge. They should definitely find a mentor who can teach them the ropes.

While deep industry and technology knowledge can certainly be an asset, an effective Product Manager doesn't necessarily need to possess it from day one. Instead, a key aspect of people management for a PM is their ability to understand and leverage their team's capacity to translate complex industry particularities. By fostering strong communication, trust, and an environment where subject matter experts can clearly articulate the nuances of the industry and technology, a PM can effectively guide product development even without being an expert themselves, relying on the collective intelligence and expertise of their team.
