While defining business case for AI projects it is very important that it is tied to the business outcomes. If this step is done right the subsequent steps will have better possibility of getting right on the track. There is no one-size-fits all approach; but the best approach while defining business case for AI projects is to make sure you understand the needs of all the stakeholders well. Also, understand what is not working well and how AI can make it work. The ROI will come eventually, and the predictability will improve as you build the models around large sets of data covering maximum possible scenarios.

Gaurav -

This is no different than any other project involving a high degree of uncertainty or widely varying expectations. If we cut corners in the due diligence process, we reap what we have sown.

I agree with you both Kiron and Sergio. But a common misconception around AI projects is that it can bring significant improvements in operations without understanding the outcomes in terms of measurable efficiency and effectiveness. Hence, AI projects are failing and it may require specific skills during defining business case.

Gaurav, I do totally agree with my fellow colleagues. AI is still in its enhancy and there is a high degree of uncertainty and lots of unknowns so organizations should proceed with care and should not shift before having a trial period or in other terms using the agile concept "Fail Fast".

This is really getting interesting Rami. Thank you for your feedback. I believe the aspect of trial period and doing POC for identified use cases are critical before defining actual scope and business case. It will help in understanding the efficiency gains, level of automation, business benefits, outcomes etc.

I am witnessing this challenge too. The way GenAI has taken AI mainstream, organizations think AI is the answer to all their problems. What is more concerning is that the decision makers are often swayed by the mainstream narrative, and may not have the know-how to make an informed decision. Agreed that POC is definitely the way to to go. Collaborating with the right talent for not just implementing once a decision has been made, but involving them in the decision making process upfront is critical. We need the right influencers to make good decisions and save ourselves from highly likely failures.
