Several thought leaders assert that the traditional Project Management (PM) role will evolve into the Chief Product Officer (CPO) role.

Despite CPO currently representing the Chief Product Officer position, what is your evaluation of this perspective? Do you consider it overly ambitious, realistic, or somewhere in between?

Great point Eduard.
We have a CEO, COO, CFO, so why not add the CPO?
The exact same rationale for the other3 fits this one as well.

It really comes down to the level of organizational project management maturity and how much of the organization's business is project-based. If both are high/significant, then there is greater likelihood of such a Chief Project Officer role reporting directly to the CEO.

Eduard, It depends upon organization' structure, projects, and business.

Eduard Hernandez, I agree with Kiron and Surupa that it depends on the organizational structure and project management function roadmap. All projects many not result in a product!

The title of Chief Project Officer (CPO) is just a job title for one person. Whether there's a CPO or not depends on what the organization needs. However, the Project Management Office (PMO) plays a vital role in making projects innovative and bringing about changes. So, instead of focusing on having more CPOs, it might be better to promote the PMO first. Maybe later, when organizations realize they need it, we'll see more CPOs.
