Projects that are part of multiple programmes?

Hi, I've been asked to help set up a programme within an organisation where some of the projects already exist among other existing programmes within the business. Is it possible to have projects that are part of more than one programme? I don't think I have come across this before. Am I missing something?

If the programs are subprograms of the main program you are managing then projects can be part of multiple sub-programs but I haven't come across a project that is part of two or more programs that have different strategic objectives - It will be difficult to manage such a project and my advise would be to move them under one program only.

The situation you describe occurs when some product is a component of multiple different more-complex products.

An airbag might be developed for different models of car, each requiring its own specific testing and certification. Each model of car would have its own program, typically with the majority of the work under the model delivering first and separate projects to integrate and certify on subsequent models. Changing business software often works the same way with one program chosen to go first and work out the issues before implementation on the other programs.

In my personal experience, this will create multiple dependences that should be avoided. Review the teams configuration could help on that. The software industry has adopted one model that could help to create teams: feature oriented team vs component oriented team. So, what you ask for is possible. But could be a nightmare.

Hello programs aggregate projects AND other activities, tasks and actions that contribute to the benefits realization plan. If there are projects in other programs that contribute to the program, i would add it to the benefits plan and monitor them in order to guarantee its outputs contribute to the program plan.

I agree with Sergio. Avoid multiple dependencies as much as you can.
