The fundamentals of taking a group of individuals and helping them become a true team don't change regardless of whether we are looking at a co-located group or a dispersed or distributed one. What does change is where a PM might need to spend greater effort or use alternate methods of achieving the same objective.

When you look at nearly all motivational theory models, none of them refer to co-location as a key requirement. For example, Daniel Pink's Purpose-Autonomy-Mastery levers from Drive can all be addressed when team members are distributed so long as a PM understands their importance and prioritizes those accordingly.

I agree with Kiron. The main concept will not change.

I agree with your opinion. The principles of PM are universal. Their scope of application is very wide. In the past, I read a book that proved this - The Deadline by DeMarco, Tom

Thank you both for responding.

The principles may not have changed but the practice has and it is more challenging. In particular the collaborative elements like project planning and anything that used to involve us being in one room moving things around on a whiteboard. Research has shown that creativity is stifled when the visual plane is limited to a small area (the laptop screen) and then we have the stilted communication flow.

When preparing for a meeting or event where I have to gather creative opinions and ideas from the team I work hard to present the questions and situations to suit the audience and situation (eg: do I prep an online whiteboard such as Mural). In a previous role I had a touchsreen laptop which was very useful for presenting and collab as I could 'draw' on whiteboards and powerpoint slides (I actually ordered some kit today to allow me to do the same with my current machine).

Of course if you had the budget it would be much better to get the team together in person for some of the more critical activities (mainly scoping, planning, WBS, etc...).

When somebody comes to me with this I made a simple question: define productivity for you and your organizations. But with something concrete, with numbers and OKRs. After that, I can help the organization.
