Privacy Considerations in a project

Many of you have probably been involved with conducting a privacy impact assessment on one or more of your projects.

Did you know it was coming? Did you budget for it? How formal were you with conducting the assessment?

Did the result have a serious impact on your project(s) because of an unresolvable privacy concern with processes you were trying to implement, or a product you were trying to implement?

Ah yes. The infamous PIA. Hold on to your hat!

Early engagement of control partners such as Privacy is a good way to avoid surprises and ensures that their needs and the effort involved in meeting them is considered.

Most of the larger companies I worked with had a staffed Privacy office with analysts who would spend some of their time doing PIA's on projects involving personal information.

Yes - we do the same, and are now working with a privacy officer. IT projects are probably more likely to be dealing with PII than others.

It is always a good idea to try to estimate all such costs when planning a project. That goes for TRAs too.

Mike, I didn’t run into such issues on our construction projects but it’s maybe due to the nature of what we do!
