Hi All,
I am currently in my final year of my Bachelors Degree in Construction Management (Honors). I am currently in the process of conduction a Literature Review on a selected topic for a Dissertation I have to complete. My current topic is "Effectiveness of 4D BIM / Planning in Tendering for Mining Project." Yet, I am struggling to find published articles or relevant scholarly information.
I am contemplating if I should change my topic to the overall effectiveness of 4D BIM & Planning in Mining Projects, yet there is also little information in this area too.
I am reaching out in hopes that someone could help me find any relevant or share relevant published articles in this field. I will also need to complete surveys and potential interviews later on in the year if I am to carry on with this topic, as I will need to collect data from experts in the field.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you. Saving Changes...

Dylan, this is actually an excellent topic for a dissertation but it’s very specific and that’s why you probably can’t find too many resources online. I don’t have a specific resource for you but have you tried searching academic databases like IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, or Google Scholar? They often have a wealth of scholarly articles on topics related to construction management and BIM.

Thank you Rami! Yes I have tried multiple different academic databases including my universities library databases. I actually have come across some success in finding resources! It took me a whole day of just searching specific areas of the field. I will continue to endeavor on!
Thanks Rami.
You might try changing your search terms. 4D BIM is really a subset of model based systems engineering (MBSE) which is a rapidly advancing field with lots of literature. Rather than the system of interest being a working mine, it is the construction process of the mine itself. Just like a mechanical system changes physical state with respect to time (heats up, parts spin, wires carry signals to controlers, etc.), a project schedule models the change in completion state of the end product over time. In a past job, I was focused on exactly that in heavy manufacturing through the use of digital twins.
You might struggle to find articles directly about application in mining, but you can compare the similarities and differences in other applications and how the application and efficacy of system modeling methods translates between different systems. The similar the better so I personally would focus on civil projects if possible before casting a broader net.
Another source you might try is ResearchGate.

HI Keith,
Thank you for the reply, that is exactly what I began doing after this post was using different wording and similar articles. It has been very hard finding anything on mining as it will at time think that mining is meant to be 'data mining' haha. I will look into similar resources maybe with some on 5D or just BIM overall, Thank you very much for the help Keith!

Hi Dylan,
Glad I could be of some help. I noticed that most search results came back related to data mining too. Try searching for "MBSE in strip mining". That will get you closer results. I noticed that strip mining is also a data analysis term (new to me), but I saw a number of articles related to mine modeling going back several decades including open pit mining, and mining under structures. One also included the following in the abstract: "Many conceptual models have been presented and applied in various manufacturing domains. However, few works were devoted to the mining sector." It's on ResearchGate but I think that's a pretty good indication that you're not going to find a whole lot specifically about mining.
