As a project manager, we have to deal with all sorts of problems every day. Which are the top common problems that you need to handle from project to project and how you normally deal with them?

I think the most common problems are communication issues. And scope changes.

We deal with communication problems by hosting weekly conference calls and even doing daily risk and status updates if necessary.

We deal with scope changes through a formal change sign off process.

Hi Liz, thanks for your builds.

Anyone out there actually thinks that dealing with political issues is one of the top common problems in project management?

Political issues are definitely a huge problem in some projects- particularly any projects that involve process changes, multi-organisation changes or multiple sponsors.

As well as the issues around scope and comms already mentioned, I would also add one around getting approvals. Many projects are delayed as certain activities, whether recruitment, procurement, or even IT accesses just take so long to get approved.

Hi Tim, that's true especially in organizations where processes are basically broken. That's why we often need to take into account all these potential delays that could jeopardize the project while we do the planning; and, most often than not, many turn up to be blind spots missed.

Wai:
Great question.

Normally, I work on IT Projects and top issues are usually the following:
resource with right skillset, scope, politics, conflict issues with resources on the project and overall stakeholder management.

The best way to deal with these issues is to have a good mix of situational and transformational leadership, emotional intelligence, political savvy, communication skills and relationship building skills.

The culture will determine the right mix of skills to be successful. Be prepared to shift, pivot and lead.
