Now that AI is not new or a guest anymore, we all have used it to some or a large extent in our work and witnessed its gains and challenges; if you were to give one piece of advice to a new PM who is getting started on his first assignment, what would it be?

Would love to hear from the community.

Ai is a boarder term. Unfortunately, I hope not, it seems to me it is close to become a new buzzword because some people use generative AI as a synonym of AI. With that said, the answers to your question are inside the two courses published free of cost by the PMI. While both are on generative AI (and your question is about AI) I think people have to take a closer look to 3 layer model.

Dear Dr. Deepa Bhide If I were to offer one piece of advice to a new PM embarking on their initial assignment, it would be to remain receptive to novel approaches and tools. The landscape of project delivery methodologies is evolving rapidly, necessitating an openness to new ideas and technologies to ensure that value is consistently delivered to the customer. Furthermore, proficiency in data analysis and the ability to translate data into actionable insights can prove invaluable for PMs across various industries.

Moreover, prioritizing collaboration and communication is paramount. AI-powered collaboration tools have the potential to enhance communication and coordination among project team members, enabling new PMs to effectively manage stakeholder expectations and cultivate a culture of productive teamwork.

The best advice is to use it to understand how it could help you in your day-to-day work. Only investing at least 10 hours you can start feeling the advantages you can get. Another advice is to start experimenting by yourself at first but then follow some tips to extract the most from it. Use CO-STAR to prompt, experiment with different LLM, try to adopt it for real use cases to gain the most in a short time.

The advice I would give is to not cave into the pressure and force-fitting AI in solving a problem. Take time upfront and evaluate first. Also, if AI is indeed the answer, simple algorithms are often better than the more complex ones.
