Wenjian Li Fraud Prevention Analyst| Apple Inc. Ireland Indonesia
Hi Guys

I 'm a student in MSc Project Management in Ireland, just get a bit consfusing about choose the topics right now. it would be brilliant , if you can spare some time to help me out here.

I 'm planning to write about , "the development of samsung" to analyze some of their key successful factors, key decisions on strategy, supply chain & procurement , company culture, compare apple with Samsung etc. However, after i review a few of thesis. The topic i've choosen seems a bit to specific to analyze one particular company, Normally people would write about particular industry or segment....

the reason for me chosen this topic is : since 2006 samsung had a significant growth i just want to provide a insight view after i read some case studies.

Should i change my topic?
Does anyone can think of a better name ?
or actually i'm talk too many areas, lack of focus ...
can anyone advice me on my major report please.

Best Regards
Wenjian

Hello Wenjian,

First, let me just point out how hilarious I find it that you would choose to write about Samsung while working for Apple. I honestly cannot think of a better way to commit industrial espionnage than by hiding it under the guise of legitimate research. Of course, being a Fraud Prevention Analyst, that would be obvious to you, but nevertheless well done!

Now, if you are worried about the scope of your paper being too restrictive, I personally wouldn't sweat it. First, you know you are doing something right if you are not doing what everybody else has already done before,. Second, I find it more interesting to read about the alpha wolf than to read about the flock of sheep. For example, reading about the automotive industry is a total snoozefest, whereas reading about how Toyota taught all the others a lesson or three is much more engaging.

I guess one thing to consider is just how Samsung's development and success is related to project management, and if it will be possible for you to find out in sufficient detail how project management functions within the company.

With your background in fraud prevention, why not write about the impact of security developments on project management?

I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with that topic, so long as you approach it rhe right way.

No business operates in isolation - everything they do fits within a general industry context, and you must make sure you establish that context, and discuss how samsung's behaviours fitted within the general industry, and how they interacted with everyone else.

You also need to investigate how what they did and achieved was and is appropriate generally - what aspects were unique to them due to particular circumstances (location, specific products, culture, time etc) and which are generally applicable to their industry both then and now, and to other industries.

I this way you would be writing about the industry as a whole, but seen through the filter of a single player.

Hi WenJian,

Writing dissertation and thesis is very different from writing a book as there are usually many rules and guidelines around it to ensure that the 500 pages document that you produce at the end is completely academically sound. Also, there are various ways to analyse factors as long as your the research methods and statistical models you have chosen are able to convince the board that you know what you are doing and you are doing it right. I suggest that you discuss this with your mentor and lecturers to get their opinions too.

Hi Wenjian,

Just came across this post. How did you go with your dissertation on PM? I ask because I am thinking of adding a post grad PM degree to my MBA, and would like some insight into other PM dissertations. Thanks,
