We are looking for a web based tool to manage our resources across multiple projects. Something more than a spreadsheet, with easy data entry. Would be a plus if it were template driven. We would greatly appreciate any recommendations you have. We don't need a complete project management suite, just this piece of the puzzle.

Thanks.

Hi Debby,

I've spoken with quite a few Intuit QuickBase users now and what you are describing fits in well with what I've heard.

SaaS or web-based, managing multiple projects, easy data entry and comes with predefined PM templates you may choose.

Best,
Alex

Debby, it would be helpful if you could provide a little more information about what are you wishing to accomplish when you say "manage resources". For example, are you looking to track who's doing what from a planning point of view or for capacity planning purposes? Do you want to track time against resources for billing purposes or to capture history to forecasting purposes? Do you need a skills database? Are you looking for freeware or to pay for something. Do you want multiple users entering data or is it centralized at a PMO.

If you are looking for a tool to figure out who's doing what, then you are looking for a fairly big piece of the puzzle - that is, to do so, you will need to put both project information and resource information into the system. It doesn't mean that you need to put every single project line in the system, you could do it from a higher level of phase or even project. If you have a budget - a system such as Planview or MS Project Server can be used - you don't have to start with using the whole system, in fact I would recommend not to until the organization up front but instead roll out functionality. Personally I like Planview for resource management and it comes in a SAAS model. If you are looking for a smaller solution, there are certainly a slew of offerings out there in a Saas model.

If you only have one person entering, why not just use MSProject - it has all to plan and track resource effort...but again, it depends on what you are trying to do.

I hope this helps.

Agree with the comment from Michelle.

However, in case that you have some time to explore around, you might want to take a look at Daptiv - http://www.daptiv.com/

They offer cloud-based solution which caters to both PPM and PSA needs.

On a similar note. are there any web-accessible PM tools that do not store the data in the cloud- i.e. you keep it on your own servers? With all the media news about (especially US) providers' security issues/backdoors, there is no way I could get our information governance people to allow us putting confidential commercial information outside of our direct control.

Tim,

ChangePoint from Compuware has both SaaS and on-premise models that might be what you need.
