As an enthusiast of Artificial Intelligence, I have been following its progression and integration into our daily activities. However, as AI systems become increasingly capable of performing complex project management tasks — from generating initial project ideas to data analysis, resource allocation, and risk assessment — a critical question arises: What will be the future role of human project managers? Will AI complement and enhance human capabilities, or could it potentially replace them entirely? Saving Changes...

I think that it all depends on us and on how we will use GenAI. In my opinion there are so many aspects in which the human beings can bring added value to the success of the projects, that this could be a motivation for all of us project managers to develop even more the soft/powerskills. Our ability to manage high level stakeholders, to coach, to take decision that are very delicate or discuss then with the Steering Boards (based on data, also produced by AI) will be a key element driving element in future.

AI is a broader term. We are using AI in project management from more than 30 years ago. If you take into account the new architecture published by Google which is the genesis of ChatGPT then I have to say that portfolio/program/project managers roles are dead in the format they were originally defined. Just take a look to 3 layers model published by the PMI. Saving Changes...

The discernment of human intelligence is very important when dealing with labor conflicts, since the Project Manager will treat the situation according to the characters of the interested parties. This nuance of interpersonal emotional intelligence is a privilege of human intelligence, which AI has not developed widely. Saving Changes...

Speed.
Yes, speed is the answer you are looking for even though it doesn't fit your answer at first glance.
Let me explain: Why do we use AI in the first place? To be more productive? More skilled in what we are doing? To minimize risks? Yes to all and everything else you currently have on your mind. But the underlying mechanism we're striving for is to speed up projects to save money and time (if you think the same way I think about our economy in a capitalist world).
Now what relevance does human intelligence (HI) have when there is a far superior AI which can do your tasks more rapidly and accurately, and where does this put us as project managers?
If you consider that strong AI (or Artificial General Intelligence - AGI) will outperform HI by its very definition, and if we can expect to get AGI within the next 1-5 years, we will have AGI Project Managers running all sorts of projects in the near future.
BUT! Even AGI is limited by the inputs we humans gave it and AGI doesn't experience the world we are experiencing (first-hand experience; and it will most likely not have a conscience on its own at this stage) . That makes it difficult to see that AGI will completely replace project managers in the future.
In my view, we will rather become the co-pilots of the AGI Project Managers to save money and time, or in other words, to increase speed, boy!
Cheers, Carl (a fallible HI project manager) Saving Changes...
