Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I do not believe the adoption of prompt engineering commoditizes project management skills. It will enhance the Project Manager who adopts prompt engineering and the advantages of GenAI. Leveraging your experience to strengthen strategic and critical analysis is a game changer in productivity. Risk and Quality Management increases when the administrative tasks of Project Management are streamlined. Then a Project Manager who leverages that experience to ask for informative and detailed prompting makes for outstanding returned results. This is return makes for a highly valued Project Manager.

The widespread use of Prompt Engineering can be revolutionary in terms of its multitude of possibilities but we should never underestimate the power of the Human-in-the-loop approach.

It seems that this is exactly what people are doing - underestimating the human-in-the-loop! Great insight. This is how I view this as well.

I believe that prompt engineering will be a supplemental tool to human project managers and not a replacement. Full human cognitive reasoning has not been replaced by AI and full validation of any AI output will be required by the human project manager.

I think many aspects of prompt engineering can support and aid the PM to help reduce time with documentation tasks and possibly provide risk mitigation situations the PM may not be aware of if they haven't previously completed a project in a new area. However, while there are multiple aspects that it can aid the PM, the more important skills (holding people accountable, proper facilitation, encouraging teamwork, problem identification, etc) will always require human intervention to ensure project success.

AI prompt engineering empowers project managers to rise above the mundane. By crafting specific instructions (prompts) for AI tools, project managers can automate repetitive tasks like scheduling meetings, generating reports, and summarizing data. This frees up valuable time to focus on strategic initiatives, fostering innovation, and building strong team relationships.

The impact goes beyond efficiency. Prompt engineering allows project managers to leverage AI's analytical capabilities. Imagine feeding project data into an AI and receiving insights into potential risks or resource allocation needs. This empowers data-driven decision-making, boosting project success rates.

In my role, I've harnessed prompt engineering for various tasks. From generating creative brainstorming prompts to automating risk assessments, AI has become a powerful ally. It's a game-changer for project managers, differentiating them from the pack and ensuring they deliver exceptional results.
Note: Including this response.

No, Sarah. Prompt engineering or AI in PM will not commoditize our discipline. People continue to be a unique commodity of consumer, producer, and/or influencer. I think that the commodity will be the AI model and its effectiveness at delivering the desired impact for a user and their particular organization.

For many years coffee was considered a commodity until Starbucks showed how to differentiate our caffeine intake. We see many examples of disruptors in various industries (AirBnb vs. hotels, Uber vs. taxis, etc.). AI is a disruptor that will improve our projects, our profession, and our careers by giving us tools that will help us drive efficiency. Improved projects means corporations get more ROI and less failed projects. Does that not make PM's more valuable?

My personal opinion is that these kinds of tools don't do the work for us, they just help us be more agile. It's crucial to know how to interact with AI to get the maximum possible value.
