Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
I totally agree with your point!

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering won’t necessarily commoditize project management skills. On the contrary, it can become a key differentiator for project managers who know how to leverage it effectively. Those who master the art of crafting efficient prompts will be able to automate tasks, boost productivity, interact more effectively with AI tools, and position themselves as high-value professionals. Prompt engineering thus becomes a strategic asset, not a threat.

I completely agree with your point of view. It is up to the Project Managers to stay relevant and make best use of Gen AI tools with precise prompts.

This is an insightful question, Sarah—and one that reflects the larger shift many of us in project management are beginning to navigate. In my view, prompt engineering doesn’t commoditize our skill set; rather, it sharpens the edge of it.

The ability to design effective prompts is really an extension of a core PM competency: clear, structured communication. Those who treat generative AI as a partner, rather than a threat, will find themselves operating with greater clarity, speed, and strategic foresight. Prompt engineering isn’t replacing critical thinking—it’s amplifying it. And those who embrace this new literacy will stand out, not blend in.

To stay relevant, we can’t afford to dismiss the tools redefining our profession. We need to understand them, experiment with them, and identify where they help us deliver more value. GenAI won’t replace the emotional intelligence, decision-making, or leadership that great project managers bring—but it will change the baseline of what’s considered efficient and insightful work.

This is an opportunity for differentiation—not displacement.

Curious to hear how others are integrating GenAI into their workflows. How are you starting to strategically iterate your most valuable prompts?

I see Gen AI is just another tool for PM. Because it facilitate and guide through process, it may reduce timeline for day-to-day tasks and/or some documentation, but at the end PM is required and essential

Automation of Routine Tasks: Prompt engineering enables AI tools to automate scheduling, reporting, risk analysis, and stakeholder communication. PMs who rely solely on these basic tasks may find their roles commoditized.

Value Shift to Strategic Thinking: As AI handles more executional work, successful PMs will be those who excel in strategic decision-making, stakeholder influence, cross-functional leadership, and navigating ambiguity—skills AI cannot replicate.

PMs as AI-Orchestrators: PMs who learn prompt engineering can leverage AI to enhance productivity and innovation. They become orchestrators of human-AI collaboration, a highly valuable and emerging capability.

Differentiation through AI Literacy: Those who combine PM expertise with prompt engineering skills can offer faster insights, smarter planning, and data-driven decision support, positioning themselves as tech-forward leaders.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
I completely agree with this assessment. Prompt engineering can only assist a PM for doing better, but a seasoned PM always take it further.

Prompt engineering will commoditize basic PM tasks, but differentiate those who lead with insight, creativity, and strategic application of GenAI. The future PM isn’t just a project tracker—they’re a technologically empowered leader who uses AI to deliver smarter, faster, and more human-centered projects.

Will Prompt Engineering Commoditize Project Management? The Goodwill Bins Paradox

The rise of AI prompt engineering is reshaping how work gets done—but just like Goodwill bins, the real value isn’t in the tools, but in how you dig, sort, and extract gold from chaos.
