Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The adoption of prompt engineering will not totally commoditize project management skills. It will indeed maximize implementation of the knowledge of PMs and lend itself to the opportunity of higher value in the marketplace.

AI uses the most relevant data it can get, but not always the most precise to a certain topic. If the project is a common project, the difference between the project managers can easily bridged by AI and an untalented PM reached the same results like a talented by using AI. At very special or very complex projects, AI helps a talented PM to differenciate from a untalented PM and to gain better results.

Drive correctly and ethical the useful of prompts like worktools makes an easier and clear enviroment for a PM. Prompts may empower and give value a PM, but PM adds value to projects

Probably both. This tool will likely commoditize project management skills in heavily resource-constrained environments AND make seasoned project managers more highly in demand when optimizing AI for tasks that are typically time grabs. For example, it could make a seasoned PM a lot more effective by freeing up time to spend more time on stakeholder engagement / management and less time on PM tactics.

Thank you for providing opportunity to discuss this. It is highly essential that a accurate and precise information is provided for the respective LLM to generate the expected feedback, useful for the task it is intended.

Prompt engineering will help project managers to demonstrate their ability to adapt to a changing business landscape and incorporate AI into their daily tasks. This will allow those project managers to handle more projects with greater complexity and/or allow them more time to focus on tasks that cannot be done by AI such as stakeholder engagement, teambuilding, etc.

Prompt engineering will not commoditize project management, it will raise the bar.
Those who level up their skills by combining AI fluency with human leadership will command higher value not lower.

In this way, prompt engineering becomes a lever for productivity, creativity, and strategic value not a threat.
PMs who use AI will replace those who don’t not the other way around.

The GenAI basically will improve the skills of PMs and improve the projects outcomes

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
I do think prompt engineering will continue to expand and grow to be used across many PMOs. That being said, the skilled Project Manager will also continue to be valuable and command higher value. As the skilled PM integrates utilization of prompt engineering and/or other AI aspects, the value of this PM will exponentially grow. Both prompt engineering and the skilled PM continue to expand in the AI arena as clients and projects demand this focus area.
